From Staten Island Borough President, James Oddo

I recently welcomed Miss New York Outstanding Teen, Staten Island’s own Sarah Lawrence, into my office at Borough Hall.

Sarah -- a 2015 graduate of St. Clare School -- was Miss Richmond County's Outstanding Teen and just recently became Miss New York's Outstanding Teen.

Her platform is The Curveball Project, raising awareness about Scoliosis, curvature of the spine, which she has lived with for years.

Sarah has spoken at a few borough schools about scoliosis. She tells the students that everyone has a curveball in life, but what matters is how you handle it.

Sarah started classes art George Washington University this week with plans to major in International Affairs..

Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Inc. was organized to encourage positive achievement by helping to nurture and build the scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living, and community involvement of our nation’s youth.

Among its initiatives, the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization hosts a national competition intended to encourage and reward the talent, communication skills, community service, and academic achievement of girls between 13 and 17 years of age.

Sarah asked insightful questions and shared her journey of good health, as well as her aspirations for the future.

Thank you for restoring hope, I told her as I wished her luck in her college studies.
